Three One Four Studio founder Alexander Webb began sanding carvings in his father’s workshop at the age of 6. With a childhood rich in the mix of art and design, as well the making of, the artist left school at 17 to start designing and producing pieces for the high-end interior market. For the next 10+ years Alexander applied his extensive manufacturing background and artist’s eye to various luxury residential projects for many named brands and artists.
A take on Alexander’s initials ACW, which he uses to sign his work with a triangle, circle, square, 314 Studio was founded by the artist in 2020 alongside manufacturing specialist Neil Walker of Penta Patterns and Model – a symbiotic relationship built on the marrying of expert manufacturing techniques and the arts.
Three One Four Studio looks at fresh ways to repurpose by-products from other industries to create art by seeing materiality as interchangeable. Producing works inspired by and utilising waste material where subtractive manufacturing techniques support additive ones, and vice-versa. Pushing material properties to their limits and rethinking how you view form, function and medium are key for Alexander across all his collections.
Inspiration spans classical design, art and architecture, from Ancient Greek to Art Deco, mid-century, Regency and contemporary. The design process for every collection starts with a sketch and a maquette (by which each collection is named), which is then 3D scanned and manipulated to create functional forms, blending Alexander’s extensive experience in both digital and physical techniques. Piece by piece, 314 Studio looks to push the boundaries of design, traditional craft and state-of-the-art production.
